Little Rock Getaway will be a good tune to play at the beginning of the campfire performance I'll be performing Saturday evening at Sundance Trail for a group of special Americans most often referred to as wounded warriors. They get to spend the weekend with their main squeezes at this beautiful guest ranch in the Colorado mountains. With the evening temperatures dropping down below freezing every night this spring I thought I'd better start out with a quick paced song with lots of chord changes to loosen up my fingers. This ought to fill the bill.

After getting request after request and playing this song so many times while featuring my fiddle playing pal, Larry Lashley, It was requested and I immediately jumped right into it at one of my performances after Larry moved to South Dakota. A few measures into the song I realized that I was either going to have to bail out or else fake the fiddle part on my guitar. I faked it and I have been faking it every since except when I'm fortunate enough to have a fiddle player at my side; which doesn't happen nearly as often as I would like it to.

One of the most rewarding aspects of performing music has to do with the new friends you meet and the memories you and those in your audience accumulate as a natural spin-off from the engagement. After driving to the ranch where I perform on Friday evenings I was greeted by a lovely lady from Germany as I walked towards the lodge. It was immediately apparent that she was a fan of old time western music; and she knew her stuff. "Got any Gene Autry songs?" "You Bet!" "Can you play Home On The Range for me?" "I'd be glad to Ma'am." I could tell from the get go that Doris and I were going to be friends. When she got back to Germany she sent me this video clip taken during the evening performance. Much obliged Doris! I hope you'll come back and see us again some day!

Somehow I have allowed myself to be hornswoggled into recording a home-made music video of the type of music I was playing over fifty years ago! I do so with great trepidation, knowing that it puts my reputation as a cowboy singer/picker at great risk. Cowboys shouldn’t stoop to playing jazz, it’s kind of like herding sheep, but, you have to keep in mind that things were different back then and I needed the money. This is “I’ll See You In My Dreams”.

Navajo Rug

My good friend Ralph Chowning requested Ian Tyson's "Navajo Rug" while a few of us were helping him and his family celebrate his 60th birthday at a camp adjacent to the beautiful Rio Chama.   His daughter Val taped it for us and part way through Ralph's wife Kathy came into the picture to make it even more fun and special for all of us, especially Ralph.  Luckily the cinnamon bear (see Critter Encounters page) didn't decide to get in on this act too!

My nine year old grand daughter went with me to my performance at the Laramie River Ranch last Friday evening.  She's a sweet little Wyoming cowgirl and a great sidekick; it was really fun having her along.  She took a few photos and shot some video while we were there.  I wish she could go with me every time.

Home On The Range
I have had a lot of requests to produce some recordings of instrumental guitar, of the type I often play during the cocktail hours that usually precede my evening performances at guest ranches. I finally decided to take a crack at it. Some of the results will be posted here on my web page as well as elsewhere. This is the first of what may be many songs if all goes well. I'd appreciate if you will let me know what you think.

Merry Christmas from me and the birds to all of my guest ranch friends! Here's a little music/video Christmas card that I recorded and sent to the Dude Ranchers Association along with a request that they forward it to all the owners, staff and guests at America's finest dude ranches. The only ones singing along on this one were the birds. In my book that's hard to top!
